From Ethiopian refugee to lawyer and education advocate running for office in Seattle: Journey Time with Girmay Zahilay

In this episode of Journey Time, we meet Girmay Zahilay, a lawyer and education advocate running for King County Council District 2 in his hometown Seattle.

Girmay, 32, shares the story of his family coming to the U.S. as Ethiopian refugees when he was 4 years old. Although they experienced many challenges along the way, they never stopped fighting for a better life. After growing up in South Seattle housing projects with a single mom and living in a homeless shelter at one point, Girmay attended Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He went on to work as a successful startup lawyer in New York, after interning at the White House during the Obama Administration. His passion for working with the youth led him to co-founding a nonprofit called Rising Leaders, aimed at empowering middle school students.

During this interview, Girmay drops some gems of wisdom, shares why he decided to take a leap toward running for office, discusses their digital strategy and opens up about the ups and downs along his journey.
