Sisters to hold ‘Strides for Survivors’ walk supporting Sandy Springs breast cancer nonprofit in honor of their mother

January 29, 2019

Three sisters in Smyrna, GA grew inspired to start a fundraising walk called ‘Strides for Survivors’ after their mom and grandma battled breast cancer.

The Scalise sisters (Samantha, Lauren and Emilie) are now gearing up to host their third annual event on February 2, 2019. The funds raised will go toward TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, the local breast cancer rehabilitation center and nonprofit that supported their family along their journey. Below you will find a Q&A with more information on Strides for Survivors and their mission. (The responses are written by Lauren.)

1.) What is Strides for Survivors and can you tell us how it supports the community?

Strides for Survivors is a non profit walk benefiting TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. We give back to this amazing organization so that other women, like my mom, can get back to their best selves after cancer treatment. The first time we hosted Strides for Survivors, in 2017, we had 150 participants and raised $6,000. Last year, in 2018, we had 300 participants and raised $10,000 for TurningPoint. This year our goal is 500 participants and to raise $15,000.

2.) Who are the sisters behind Strides for Survivors?

18-year-old Samantha Scalise (Galloway Class of 2018, now at University of Tennessee Knoxville), 16-year-old Lauren Scalise (Galloway Class of 2020) and 14-year-old Emilie Scalise (Galloway Class of 2022).

3.) You all decided to start the walk/fundraiser to honor your mother. Tell us about the struggles she overcame and describe her in a few words.

Our mom is a strong, confident woman but breast cancer took a little bit from that. She overcame many struggles such as the emotional strain of diagnosis and multiple surgeries and the physical obstacle of not being able to move around freely and having to ask for help. Today our mom is almost 3 years cancer free.

4.) What message do you have to families who may be experiencing the same battle?

Cancer affects more than just the patient. It impacts the entire family and friends. Please accept help when offered.

5.) When and where is the event? And how can people register or learn more about Strides for Survivors?

February 2, 2019 at Chastain Park. Visit Stridesforsurvivors.org and click on the registration page for more information.
